Telling The World Of Battlestar Galactica Characters

By Willard Y. Wuckert

Battlestar Galactica is a popular and well-known science fiction franchise that, despite having been around for decades, continues to attract new fans. The BGS universe was first presented to television audiences in 1978 through the series of the same name; this led to the writing of novels, the preparation of comic books, and even the release of video games all built around the same basic storyline. Fans around the world are enjoying these varying adaptations and extensions of the original story and characters because it allows them a chance to truly experience the world of Galactica. Although the roles and details of some characters have changed throughout the variations of the main storyline, the essence of each character has been maintained and fans have received each of the new stories quite well.

Glen Larson was the mind behind both the original series that ran for one season in 1978 as well as the brief sequel released in 1980 which contained a few of the original characters. The basic idea of BGS is that the wicked robotic Cylon race is constantly trying to destroy the few remaining humans left in the galaxy. Even though the show was taken off the air after just one season, it earned a cult following amongst many fans who even protested the cancellation outside of the television studio that broadcasted the show.

The following BGS series was produced from 2004 to 2009 after the successful presentation of a three hour miniseries which was released to much praise in 2003. This was a re-imagining of the original series so it featured the same basic characters with some notable updates to make them feel more realistic for modern viewers. Because it ran for several seasons, the creators were able to spend more time developing story arcs for individual characters and for the series as a whole.

Spin off projects were immediately begun after Battlestar Galactica broadcasted its final show in 2009 in order to further the storyline. The TV show Caprica was a prequel to BGS and allowed viewers to get a clearer idea of the events which triggered the storyline beginning in the first episode in 2004.

There are many true Battlestar Galactica fans who love to get their hands on all creative material that adds life to this unique sci-fi universe. Video game fans who also like the series can enjoy online games that allow you to interact with the popular characters while enjoying a well-designed MMO game.
